Winter Fly Fishing

Winter Fly Fishing

When it comes down to it, winter fly fishing is some of the best fishing in the world! Not only are their hardly any crowds, but there are many lakes and streams that you can fish in year round, so some of your favorite spots may be available to you and you alone in those cold winter months. There are a few guidelines you may want to know before you strap on all your fishing gear and head on out. Winter fly fishing is a little bit different than summer, spring or fall fly fishing.

One of the first things you want to do it check the weather. It may seem a bit silly, for you know it is going to be cold, but you want to make sure that it will not be below freezing temperatures, for that will not be enjoyable fishing for anyone. Also, check the rivers for their water levels, coastal regions that do not usually get snow or ice will need to be checked. One of the best times to go winter fly fishing is in the middle of the afternoon on a mild winter day, it may also be good to go when the sun is out to take at least some of the chill off.

Bundle up! Now you may have known that already, but it is especially important to layer your clothing and make sure that you are going to be extremely warm and comfortable. Breathable waders which are layered underneath are absolutely great for winter ice fishing, for they are comfortable and you will love them. A hat and fingerless gloves are also great additions when you are winter fly fishing, for you will be able to keep your hands and head warm.

Although all fly fishing is tough, winter fly fishing just takes some practice, patience and the love for the cold weather. It is especially beautiful in the winter and if you can get past the cold weather, you will see that the scenery in the winter is breath taking. Also, you will never have to worry about crowds in the winter, it will just be you, a partner hopefully and the fish - what could be more awesome?
