The Wet Fly Swing

Although, the wet fly swing sounds a little strange and you may not have ever heard of it, it is definitely one of the oldest fly fishing techniques ever. There is not a particular fish that this technique is used for, it can be used for all different types of fish and will work as long as there is a current. Some of the fish that you may want to use the wet fly swing for are the striped bass, big trout’s and salmon.

Now, you may be curious as to why the wet fly swing was designed in the first place. The wet fly swing is a technique you can use to get the fly deep down, quick so you can swing the fly in front of whatever fish you are trying to catch. One of the areas where the wet fly swing is mostly used is with streamers such as the Woolly Bugger or the Muddler Minnow. These fish are the most common ones caught when a fly fishermen uses the wet fly swing.

When you are starting out learning the wet fly swing, you will probably notice that most fly fishermen use a sinking tip line when they are using the wet fly swing. Of course though, the weight on the line depends on the variety of the fish and the magnitude of the water. You should probably use eight or above weight when you are fishing for a salmon or a Steelhead, but you can take the weight on down from there for other sorts of game fish. You have to keep in the back of your mind that when using the wet fly swing, you are generally fishing for the fish that are lying deep under the water, so not only will you be fighting the fish, but you will also be fighting the current.

While this technique is all about finding the fish down below, this is not the only technique you can use. There are many different kinds and all of them can not only improve your casting but will improve your ability to catch fish. So before you head out to the water, take a moment to research some of the oldest techniques, you may be surprised.
