Sponsorship and Fishing

When it comes to sponsorship and fishing, it is very hard for a fisherman to get a sponsorship from a company, so here are a few guidelines to present when you are working toward getting a company to pay you to fish. Although it is difficult for an angler to keep up with the never ending costs of fishing, for example the best rods, the lines, the tackle, the bait and of course the wardrobe, you need to make sure that you are able to bring something to the table when you finally decide to fish competitively and have a company sponsor you.

Now, a fisherman may look at sponsorship as something completely different then what the company’s view of it is. Companies are generally looking to increase their market share and to generate more revenue for themselves – they are instinctively looking for ways to get people to purchase more and more of their items versus their competitors. So before you even consider looking into sponsorship, you need to evaluate exactly what you could offer the company and how you would be a valuable asset to them – mainly, why would they want to sponsor you?

If you have answered the above question with ‘because I win a lot of tournaments’, you definitely want to sit down and think of a better approach. Most likely, these companies will not care how many tournaments you have won and how much money you have earned, they want to know how much money you can earn for them.

Just like any job, you need to understand and make sure you can deliver revenue to any company that would be willing to sponsor you. A good question to ask yourself is ‘What can I bring to the table?’, once you figure out the answer to that question, you are ready to take a meeting with one of the companies you would like to sponsor you.

Another thing to remember is that you will not likely be paid very much to start out – if you are paid anything, they could just give you access and discounts to and on their products. Keep in mind, that you do not have to agree to these terms and a sponsorship contract will definitely benefit you, this way you get what you want and the company gets what they want.
