Choosing a Fly Fishing Rod
It does not matter if you are an experienced or a beginner fly fisherman, choosing your fly rod is one of the most important factors when it comes to fly fishing. Many fish anglers are not only fastidious about their fly rod, but they are also very passionate about the type and feel of it. It is almost as if it is their spouse they are dealing with when it comes to their fly rod.
A few tips to keep in your back pocket when you are choosing a fly fishing rod is to ask yourself a few questions. What will the fly rod be used for? What type of fish are you trying to catch with this particular fly rod? What type of action are you looking for in a fly rod? What type of grip are you interested in? All of these questions are certainly something to keep in mind when you are picking out your first or your tenth fly rod.
When picking a fly rod, you will need to consider not just the size of the waters you will be fishing in but also what type of fish you are looking to catch. If you are looking to cast to catch a trout in a creek, the size of your rod could be smaller, but if you are looking to catch a Largemouth Bass or a Steelhead, you will need a larger and longer rod.
If you are not familiar with how fly rods are numbered, you may be a bit confused for flies themselves are numbered where the smaller the number the larger the fly – fly rods are the exact opposite, the larger the number, the larger the rod. Let’s say that you are looking to hook a Tarpon or maybe a Striper, you will need to purchase yourself a 12wt. rod that is designed for longer distance casting and bigger flies.
When it comes down to what type of action you are looking for in a rod, it can be broken down into slow, moderate and fast. A fast rod is great for those long casting distances and also if you are fishing directly in the wind. The moderate level is a great fly rod for beginners is probably the most popular being sold now. The final slow level is the one that is a dying breed; there are not that many people that still use these rods for they do not cast very far. However, they are fantastic for creeks, ponds and small streams!
